Two separate crashes on westbound Highway 401 occurred on Sunday, resulting in serious injuries and road closures.
In the first incident near Newcastle’s Mill Street exit, a motorcyclist collided with a deer and was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Detours were in place while crews cleared the scene.
Shortly after, a single-vehicle rollover occurred near Newtonville, close to the Durham–Northumberland County border. A 30-year-old driver was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with critical injuries, while a 26-year-old passenger was uninjured.
The westbound lanes between Wesleyville and Newtonville roads were closed for several hours as the OPP investigated both crashes.
