Highway 17 in the Wawa area has reopened after being closed for nearly eight hours overnight due to a serious collision in Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the crash, which involved two vehicles. One driver was killed, while the other sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
The highway was closed in both directions between Highway 563 in Batchawana Bay and Pinewood Drive in Wawa, starting around 9:16 p.m. Friday, with no estimated reopening time. The OPP, Algoma Ambulance, and the Wawa Fire Department attended the scene. The closure was lifted just after 5 a.m. Saturday, and the scene was cleared before 11 a.m.
Police have not released details about the victims or any potential charges. The collision occurred about 60 kilometers south of Wawa, near Katherine Cove. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
