An 87-year-old man from Sarnia has died following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 402 in London Friday afternoon, which also left four others hospitalized. The crash occurred just before 12:30 p.m. near Colonel Talbot and Wonderland roads, close to the OPP West Region Headquarters.

OPP reports that an SUV traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lanes, striking a minivan before colliding with a transport truck. The SUV came to rest in a ditch. Three people in the minivan were taken to hospital with injuries, and tragically, the 87-year-old passenger in the minivan later died from his injuries.

Police expect the eastbound lanes of Highway 402 to remain closed for up to eight hours, with reopening estimated around midnight. This is the second highway closure this week; earlier, a chemical spill had closed another section of Highway 402 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area and take alternate routes. The OPP’s Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team is investigating the crash to determine the cause.
