A house fire on Malakoff Street in St. Thomas sent smoke wafting across the city Friday night. The blaze broke out in the attic around 9:30 p.m., prompting multiple 911 calls. Fire crews arrived quickly, as Station #1 is only minutes away, and were able to bring the fire under control despite significant challenges.

Thick smoke blanketed the area, staying low due to weather conditions and making visibility difficult. The home’s surrounding trees complicated access for firefighters, who also had to battle intense heat while working in the attic. Hydro crews were called in, and the narrow street added to the logistical difficulties.

One of the two residents was home at the time and escaped safely. No injuries or animals were reported. Police, EMS, and Victim Services supported the firefighting effort. While the cause is still under investigation, it is not believed to be suspicious.
