Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is reviewing the arrest of a driver who sustained injuries after fleeing the scene of a three-vehicle crash on Highway 400 in Vaughan early Thursday morning.
The collision occurred around midnight near Bass Pro Mills Drive, when a green panel van rear-ended a minivan. The impact caused the minivan to collide with a third vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.
According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the off-duty officer pursued the van driver, who had fled the scene. With assistance from Toronto and York Regional Police, the suspect was later located and taken into custody.
The SIU is now investigating the circumstances of the arrest and the injuries the man suffered during his interaction with police. His injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-altering. Further details, including the man’s age and place of residence, have not been released.
The crash forced the closure of the highway’s northbound lanes for several hours, reopening just before 9:30 a.m. Police continue to investigate potential charges related to impaired and dangerous driving, as well as fleeing the scene. Authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
