A 21-year-old man from London, Ontario, is facing numerous criminal charges after a stolen vehicle crash north of Searchmont in July. The incident began on July 17, when Ontario Provincial Police received a report of a stolen vehicle from the Searchmont Community Centre and Fire Hall. Before officers arrived, local volunteer firefighters found the vehicle abandoned in a ditch along Highway 532 near Station Road.

Police determined the driver was impaired by an unknown substance and transported him to the Sault Ste. Marie detachment for further evaluation. Investigators later connected the suspect to a police pursuit the day before, during which a vehicle had been reported for erratic and dangerous driving on Highway 17.

Authorities also discovered the man had lied about his identity, was prohibited from driving, and had multiple outstanding legal restrictions. As a result, he faces a lengthy list of charges, which include impaired driving and motor vehicle theft. The suspect’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and he remains in custody following a bail hearing.
