A man was airlifted to hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Ottawa’s south end on Tuesday morning. The crash occurred around 10:53 a.m. on First Line Road near Phelan Road East.
Emergency crews arrived to find a pickup truck had veered off the road and struck a tree, trapping the driver inside. Ottawa firefighters used hydraulic tools to extricate the man, successfully freeing him by 11:15 a.m. A charged hose line was deployed as a safety measure during the rescue.
Paramedics believe the driver of the pickup may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash. He sustained additional injuries from the collision and was airlifted to hospital in serious but stable condition.
The second vehicle involved, a car that ended up in a ditch, was driven by an individual who was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
Update – Ottawa Police announced on Wednesday that a 60-year-old man has been charged with careless driving causing bodily harm. Additionally, he was given a three-day suspension of his driver’s licence after registering a warn reading on an approved screening device.
