A working smoke alarm is credited for saving tenants living at a multi-unit residence where a major fire broke out on Tuesday night in North Bay.

Firefighters, along with police and paramedics, were called to the blaze on Lorne Avenue just after 10 p.m. Fire crews arrived in just over four minutes to find a severe fire on the main floor of an apartment, with flames already reaching the attic.

Crews immediately launched an interior attack and searched the building to ensure all occupants were out. Fire officials said the functioning smoke alarm gave the tenants in the basement apartment the early warning they needed to evacuate safely with their pet and call for help.

While the tenants were assessed by EMS for smoke inhalation, no one required further medical attention.

North Bay Fire Chief Jason Whiteley emphasized the life-saving importance of smoke alarms. “A working smoke alarm gives you a chance,” he said. “A chance to wake up. A chance to run. A chance to live.” He also reminded residents that smoke alarms must be installed on every floor and outside all sleeping areas, as required by law. Testing alarms monthly is also essential.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation, and the total damage has yet to be determined.
