A fire at a home in Metcalfe caused significant damage to the family’s backyard and spread to the house before being brought under control.

Ottawa Fire Services responded to the incident at a residence on Bowen Street at around 3:33 p.m. Sunday, after multiple 9-1-1 callers reported flames engulfing trees, a fence, and the back deck.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the back wall of the home and was moving into the kitchen. Hazards, including live hydro wires overhead and propane tanks in the yard, complicated the response. Firefighters had to pull down part of the kitchen ceiling to check for hidden hot spots.

The fire was declared under control roughly an hour later, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, according to Ottawa Fire Services.
