Hamilton police are investigating an incident involving a 16-year-old girl who was critically injured after hitting a pole from an SUV.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on September 13, near Mohawk Road West and Ashton Road. Police say a stolen Volkswagen SUV, driven by a 15-year-old girl, crashed into a light pole with two passengers inside: a 16-year-old girl and another 15-year-old girl.
At the time of the crash, the 16-year-old was leaning out of the passenger side of the vehicle, which led to her sustaining critical injuries.
After the collision, the driver turned onto Ashton Road, where the injured teen was removed from the vehicle. As the other girls attempted to flee, they hit a witness’s car that had stopped to help the injured girl. The SUV was later found abandoned a short distance away on Darlington Street.
Authorities were able to locate one of the girls later that night with help from the witness. The other girl has since come forward, and both have been interviewed. Charges are expected, though the investigation is ongoing. As the girls are under 18, their identities have not been released.
The 16-year-old remains in serious condition in the hospital. Police are asking anyone with information, including dashcam or security footage, to contact investigators at 905-546-4753 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
