Four people were hospitalized following an apartment fire Saturday morning in Hamilton’s East Mountain area. Fire crews were called to 987 Mohawk Rd. East around 8:52 a.m., after receiving multiple reports of a blaze between Regency Street and Moxley Drive.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy black smoke and flames pouring from a third-floor unit in the three-storey building. Inside the apartment, one individual was found without vital signs. Thanks to the efforts of paramedics, the person was revived on scene and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Three additional individuals were rescued and transported to hospital for treatment related to smoke inhalation.

While the fire was brought under control relatively quickly, the affected unit sustained severe fire damage. Water damage also impacted the two apartments directly below. Damage is currently estimated at approximately $500,000.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is assisting in the investigation. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
