A woman managed to escape after her vehicle plunged into the Severn River late Tuesday morning in Ramara Township. Emergency crews were dispatched to Rama Road near Somerset Drive just before noon after reports that a truck had gone into the water.

Ramara Fire Chief Tony Stong said both Ramara Fire and Rescue Services and the Rama Fire Department responded. Upon arrival, they found the pickup truck submerged under a bridge, but the driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, had already managed to escape and swim to safety before first responders arrived.

Provincial police clarified that the truck did not fall off the bridge but instead slid down an embankment into the river. The vehicle was later recovered from the water.

The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The cause of the incident is still under investigation. Rama Road, south of Highway 169, was briefly closed while crews worked to remove the truck.
