Clarington Fire is urging drivers to move over for emergency vehicles after a fire truck was struck by a transport truck on Highway 401 early Friday morning. The fire truck, which was protecting the scene of a collision near Newtonville Road around 2 a.m., had four firefighters inside when it was hit. Two were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Despite flashing emergency lights and other safety measures, Clarington fire trucks have been hit multiple times in recent years while responding to highway incidents. The latest collision prompted a reminder from Mayor Adrian Foster for drivers to slow down and give emergency crews space to work safely.

The driver of the transport truck, a 42-year-old man from Woodstock, Ontario, has been charged with careless driving. The Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Labour are investigating the incident. The municipality also thanked emergency responders for their quick actions and the public for their support.
