A resident in Huntsville avoided major damage after waking up to smoke and charred walls early Saturday morning and calling 9-1-1.

Fire crews from the Huntsville Lake of Bays Fire Department responded shortly after midnight to a chimney fire on Penfold Lake Road. About 20 firefighters worked quickly to stop the flames from spreading through the roof and attic, successfully saving the main living area.

Officials say the resident’s prompt call and the firefighters’ rapid response prevented the blaze from causing further destruction. No one was injured.

Fire Prevention Officer Steve Markham reminded residents to have chimneys inspected and cleaned before using wood-burning appliances and to dispose of ashes safely in a sealed metal container kept outside and away from buildings. The department emphasized that regular maintenance of chimneys and heating systems is key to preventing fires during the winter season.
