Working smoke alarms helped save seven teenagers from a house fire in North Bay early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to a blaze on Janey Avenue just after 5 a.m. and arrived to find heavy flames coming from the roof and rear of the home. Thanks to the alarms, all seven teens staying in the residence were able to evacuate safely before crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire prevention division. Deputy Fire Chief Greg Saunders said the incident highlights the importance of properly installed and maintained smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, which provide crucial early warning during emergencies.
