Greater Sudbury police are investigating two separate fatal incidents involving pedestrians that occurred Wednesday morning.
The first happened around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lasalle Boulevard and Attlee Avenue, where a 39-year-old woman was struck and later pronounced dead in hospital. The driver involved remained at the scene.
About two hours later, around 6:15 a.m., officers responded to Maley Drive near the Notre Dame Avenue on-ramp after a motorist reported finding a person lying on the road. Police confirmed that the individual was deceased and later located a driver believed to be involved who had initially left the scene.
Both deaths remain under investigation in collaboration with the coroner’s office. The identity of the person found on Maley Drive has not yet been confirmed, and possible charges are pending the outcome of the investigations.
Update – A 23-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a fatal collision that occurred Wednesday morning on Maley Drive. The charges include failing to remain at the scene of a fatal collision, operating an unsafe vehicle, and driving without a clear front view.
According to police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn, the unsafe vehicle charge stems from the woman continuing to drive after her vehicle was damaged in the collision. She has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on January 14.
The victim of the Maley Drive crash is identified to be a 37-year-old Sudbury woman.
