A mid-air collision in South Glengarry Township, Ont., left one person dead Saturday morning, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
The crash occurred around 10:50 a.m. while two planes, both operated by Cornwall Aviation Ltd., were reportedly conducting separate training exercises. A Piper Seminole landed safely at Cornwall-Summerstown Regional Airport with two people on board, who were unharmed.
The second aircraft, a Cessna 172, was located in a forested area near Avonmore. The sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that locating the plane was challenging due to its remote location. Investigators suspect the collision severed one of the plane’s wings.
The Transportation Safety Board is coordinating specialized equipment to remove the Cessna and expects the investigation to continue for several days. Police have asked the public to avoid the area and are seeking any witnesses. County Road 25 remained closed as of mid-afternoon.
Update – The deceased victim is identified to be a 28-year-old pilot from Montreal.
