Two Uxbridge firefighters remain hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle while attending a separate collision on Highway 47.
Durham Regional Police say the incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. near Wagg Road as crews were responding to a crash involving a transport truck and a pickup towing a trailer. Hazardous, snow- and ice-covered roads are believed to have played a role.
A 42-year-old firefighter was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre and remains in critical but stable condition. A 37-year-old fire captain also suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital. Another fire captain, age 54, was treated for minor injuries and has since been released.
The transport truck driver and the SUV driver involved in the incident sustained minor injuries. Police note the SUV driver stayed at the scene.
DRPS Chief Peter Moreira emphasized that the incident highlights the ongoing risks emergency responders face while assisting the public.
