A late-night fire on Eccles Street in Centretown West sent a man in his 30s to hospital in critical condition on Saturday. Ottawa firefighters responded just before 9 p.m. to a blaze on the main floor of a multi-unit building and rescued one resident minutes after arriving.
The fire was brought under control shortly afterward, and an OC Transpo bus was brought in to shelter displaced occupants. The cause remains under investigation.
