Fire crews are fighting a stubborn five-alarm blaze at a high-rise on Thorncliffe Park Drive that forced dozens of residents from their homes due to elevated carbon monoxide readings.
The fire began at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the parking level of 11 Thorncliffe Park Drive, likely sparked by an electrical issue before spreading into the interior wall structure. According to Toronto Fire, the flames moved through insulation inside the walls, sending smoke into the neighbouring building at 21 Thorncliffe Park Drive.
Hydro and gas service to both towers was shut off as a safety measure, and TTC buses were brought in to shelter displaced residents. While power has since been restored to most units, carbon monoxide levels remained high.
Paramedics have been on scene since mid-afternoon, but no injuries have been reported. Over 100 residents have been displaced from the two affected apartments. Fire officials say it’s still unclear when residents will be able to return to their homes.
Crews will stay on scene until the fire is completely out and will remain for at least 24 additional hours to ensure carbon monoxide levels are fully cleared.
