Ottawa firefighters rescued a man early Friday after a fire broke out in a second-floor unit of a high-rise on Mayview Avenue in the Carlington area.

Crews were alerted around 3:53 a.m. and arrived within minutes, evacuating residents to OC Transpo buses as smoke filled the hallway. Firefighters forced their way into the affected apartment, quickly extinguished a blaze that had spread from the living room toward the balcony, and located a man in his 30s trapped in a bedroom.

He was brought outside and treated for smoke inhalation but did not require hospital care. The fire was declared under control by 4:37 a.m., and ventilation efforts were completed before residents were allowed back inside.
