Drivers in southern Ontario faced major delays Friday as multiple crashes slowed traffic along Highway 401.
By 11:55 a.m., OPP reported that westbound lanes between Cedar Creek Road and Oxford Road 29/Drumbo Road, west of Cambridge, were fully closed following several collisions involving commercial vehicles, including transport trucks and delivery vans.
One truck carrying 40,000 litres of liquid asphalt was leaking, prompting specialists and the Ministry of Environment to respond. Intermittent lane closures were expected during the cleanup. No injuries were reported.
Drivers caught in the closure were allowed to slowly move along the shoulder. OPP later indicated the highway might reopen by 6 p.m.
The incident followed an overnight closure of the eastbound lanes at Blenheim Road due to icy conditions, which lasted from 10:05 p.m. Thursday until approximately 7 a.m. Friday.
