A 66-year-old Toronto garbage truck driver was killed Tuesday morning when the vehicle he was operating rolled and struck him in Scarborough.
The incident occurred around 8:34 a.m. near Middleport Crescent and Pennyhill Drive in Malvern. Police said the man was outside the truck when it began to roll; he was working alone at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The City of Toronto confirmed the victim was an employee and offered condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Mayor Olivia Chow described the incident as “devastating” and ordered flags at City Hall, Metro Hall, and Civic Centres to be flown at half-mast.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour is investigating, and the Toronto Civic Employees Union Local 416 identified the deceased as a member of the Solid Waste unit, expressing condolences and confirming they are cooperating with authorities to determine the circumstances.
