Two people were taken to hospital after an early morning apartment fire in the city’s northwest on Thursday, with investigators examining whether an electric bike was the cause.
Emergency crews were called around 5:30 a.m. to a residential building on Eglinton Avenue West near Keele Street in the Keelesdale area. The fire was contained to a second-floor unit of the three-storey building, and two women were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
Several residents were displaced by the blaze and sheltered on a TTC bus while crews worked at the scene. Eglinton Avenue West was shut down in both directions for several hours and reopened around 8 a.m.
Police confirmed that a damaged e-bike was removed from the unit and said the investigation is ongoing, following reports that the bike’s battery may have exploded and sparked the fire.
