Ottawa paramedics report that an elderly man was hospitalized in life-threatening condition following a fire in the city’s Centretown neighbourhood Sunday night.
Emergency crews responded around 9:30 p.m. to the 200 block of Gladstone Avenue, where firefighters encountered heavy smoke and zero visibility on the fourth floor. Inside the affected apartment, they found an unconscious resident, who was evacuated and treated on scene before being transported to hospital.
Several other residents were also safely evacuated via stairwells. The fire, which started in the kitchen of the fourth-floor apartment, was quickly extinguished and declared under control by 10:04 p.m.
Paramedics said a man in his 70s suffered critical smoke inhalation and severe burns, while an man in his 80s was hospitalized with smoke inhalation in stable condition.
