A driver sustained minor injuries in a crash on Highway 417 near Vanier early Monday after safety features in his vehicle had been altered. Ottawa OPP say the collision was reported around 6 a.m. and revealed the factory steering wheel with an airbag had been removed and replaced with an aftermarket wooden wheel.
Police also noted the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, causing his head to strike the steering wheel during the crash. OPP remind drivers that removing airbags from a vehicle is illegal. Failing to wear a seatbelt carries fines ranging from $200 to $1,000, along with two demerit points.
