Three people were hospitalized after a fire damaged a Waterloo apartment building late Monday night.

Emergency crews responded to a blaze at 155 Lincoln Rd., near Ellis Crescent North, at about 11:15 p.m. The 45-unit building provides supportive housing for women, gender-diverse individuals and families through a YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo program aimed at preventing homelessness.

Paramedics said three residents were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. At least eight people were displaced, though officials have not said where they stayed overnight.

Fire officials estimate the damage at roughly $500,000. Waterloo Regional Police say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
