A teenager is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a construction vehicle in Severn Township Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Kinnear Sideroad and Upper Big Chute Road at around 7:20 a.m., where firefighters found a vehicle had collided with the rear of a backhoe. Severn fire officials said multiple fire apparatus and administrative vehicles responded to the scene.

Fire crews noted that road conditions were bare and wet at the time of the collision. The roadway is maintained by the county, which sent a plow through after the crash, while township plows and sanders were also operating in the area.

Ornge air ambulance officials said the teen was first airlifted to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

Upper Big Chute Road between Laughlin Falls Road and Quarry Road remains closed as the Technical Collision Investigation Unit continues to examine the scene.
