One person has died after a serious two-vehicle collision that forced the closure of Highway 540 on Manitoulin Island Tuesday evening.

Ontario Provincial Police say the crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. between Emery Road and Robertson Road. Officers from the Manitoulin detachment responded along with UCCM Police, paramedics and local fire crews.

Police confirmed one driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

As of 9 p.m., Highway 540 remained closed in both directions, with police warning the shutdown could be lengthy as investigators work at the scene. On Wednesday morning, police announced that the highway has reopened.

OPP said the investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
