Fire prevention officials are investigating a house fire in Kitchener that caused significant damage to a semi-detached home.

Five fire trucks were dispatched late Thursday afternoon to a residence near Fischer-Hallman Road and Victoria Street South. The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to a home on Calais Place, with most of the impact affecting the structure. Fire crews have raised concerns about the stability of the floor joists.

Two people were inside the home when the fire broke out. One person was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. No further details about those affected have been released.

Fire officials say the blaze is not considered suspicious. It is believed to have started in the basement and was contained to the lower two levels of the home. The neighbouring semi-detached unit was not affected.

Fire prevention staff from the Kitchener Fire Department are expected to remain on site Friday as the investigation continues.
