Ottawa fire crews quickly brought a detached garage fire under control in the city’s west end on Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the 900 block of Winnington Avenue around 12:45 p.m. after reports of a garage fire located very close to a house. Two vehicles were inside the structure, and thick black smoke could be seen rising from several blocks away.
The most severe flames were on the side of the garage nearest the home. Crews checked both the garage and the house to confirm no one was inside and used chainsaws to force entry through the garage door to access the fire.
The blaze was contained by 1:04 p.m. Although the home was not damaged by fire, heat from the garage caused several windows to break. No injuries were reported, and the family was able to safely return to their home.
