Police are investigating a suspicious early-morning fire that displaced nearly 20 residents from a housing complex over the weekend.

Sault Fire Services were called to a residential blaze in the 600 block of Second Line West, near Goulais Avenue, shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday. Fire crews arrived to find visible smoke and flames, prompting a full response along with an overtime crew.

Fire officials said the cause of the blaze is considered suspicious, and the investigation has been turned over to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. The fire occurred in a community housing area, affecting six units and causing significant damage.

Eighteen residents were displaced, and the Red Cross was brought in to assist. Social Services staff also opened a nearby neighbourhood hub to provide warmth, food, and rest for affected tenants while support teams work with families impacted by the incident.

Three people were taken to hospital as a precaution, and officials reported extensive damage to the building. Police confirmed the case has been assigned to a detective with Investigation Services and remains under active investigation.
