Four people were injured in a pair of related crashes involving a transit bus on Highway 35/115 in Clarington Thursday afternoon.
Durham Regional Police say a Durham Region Transit bus was travelling north near Concession Road 6 around 4:35 p.m. when it experienced a mechanical issue and pulled onto the shoulder. Shortly afterward, a Honda sedan struck the rear of the stopped bus. The bus driver and two passengers exited the vehicle, and a Dodge pickup truck stopped nearby to assist.
About 10 minutes later, a Subaru SUV collided with both the Dodge pickup and the bus, striking the pickup driver and the bus passengers.
The Honda driver, a 47-year old man, was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, though police said Friday that the individual’s condition had stabilized. The bus passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the Dodge driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the two collisions.
