A Guelph woman’s Tesla has been impounded after her son was arrested in connection with an impaired driving investigation.

Guelph police say they were notified of a rear-end collision shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday on Stone Road West near the Hanlon Expressway. The driver who reported the crash told officers he suspected the other motorist was impaired, but later called back to say the two parties had settled the matter and police assistance was no longer required.

Despite that update, officers continued investigating because of the impairment allegation. They soon located the Tesla in a nearby ditch and spoke with the driver, who showed signs of impairment and smelled strongly of alcohol. Police say he refused to comply with a roadside breath demand.

The man was taken to the police station, where he again declined to provide a breath sample. The 35-year-old was charged with impaired driving, refusing a breath demand, and careless driving.

As a result, his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was seized for a seven-day impound period.
