An early morning fire at a small apartment building in Timmins ended with no serious injuries after occupants got out safely.

Emergency crews were dispatched just after 7 a.m. Thursday to a three-unit residence on Elm Street South. Firefighters arriving from Stations 5 and 3 saw light smoke coming from the rear of the structure. They traced the problem to a mattress burning in the basement and were able to put out the fire quickly, removing the mattress before flames spread elsewhere.

The four people inside the building had already evacuated by the time crews arrived. Paramedics checked them for mild smoke inhalation and cleared them at the scene. Fire officials did not release an estimate of the damage or confirm what caused the mattress to catch fire.
