One person has died and another was critically injured after a house fire in Napanee late Saturday night, according to provincial police.
Lennox and Addington County OPP say officers were called to a home on Switzerville Road just before 9:30 p.m. Fire crews were already on scene when police arrived and reported that occupants may have been trapped inside the burning house.
Police say a 59-year-old man escaped by jumping from a second-floor balcony and was taken to hospital in critical condition. A second resident, a 34-year-old man, was treated and found not to be seriously injured. A third occupant, a 65-year-old man, was initially unaccounted for.
Firefighters later discovered human remains inside the residence. While police have not yet confirmed the identity, a postmortem examination will be conducted. Investigators noted that all three men lived at the home.
Crews remained at the scene through the night, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
