Approximately 25 firefighters responded to a residential blaze in Schumacher on Monday evening.
The Timmins Fire Department received the call at about 5:36 p.m., and crews had the fire under control by 11 p.m., according to Deputy Fire Chief Scott Foster. Firefighters from Stations 1, 3 and 5 attended the scene.
The three-unit building sustained major structural damage, including a collapsed roof and partial collapse of the second floor. Initial crews launched an aggressive interior attack on the upper unit to confirm no one remained inside. Residents from the main floor and basement units had already evacuated safely before firefighters arrived. Once all occupants were accounted for, crews shifted to a defensive strategy due to the rapid spread of flames and concerns about structural stability. Additional personnel from Station 1 were called in to provide aerial ladder support.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, though officials say it is not considered suspicious. A damage estimate has not been released, and investigators were expected to return to the site Tuesday morning.
During the emergency response, the Timmins Police Service temporarily closed both directions of traffic between McIntyre Road and Father Costello Drive/Highway 101 West to assist firefighters.
