Eight people were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a coach bus carrying 47 passengers overturned on Highway 401 in eastern Ontario on Sunday evening.

The single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 7:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401, east of Napanee, between County Road 4 and County Road 6. According to Ontario Provincial Police, the bus veered into a ditch and rolled onto its side in the eastbound lanes. Authorities noted that road conditions were slippery at the time.

Eight passengers were taken to two nearby hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including cuts, fractures, and dislocations.

The eastbound lanes were shut down for roughly four hours as emergency crews responded and cleared the scene, reopening around 11 p.m. Police continue to investigate what led to the rollover.
