A 12-year-old boy from Guelph has been charged after a stolen minivan was linked to a hit-and-run crash that caused significant damage.

Police say a Dodge Caravan was reported missing shortly after 8 a.m. on Jan. 21 from a home in the city’s east end. The homeowner told officers that her friend’s son had been staying overnight but was gone by the time she woke up.

Not long after the report was filed, another police service informed her that the van had been involved in a collision with a separate stolen vehicle. The crash resulted in more than $10,000 in damage.

On Monday, the boy attended the local police station with a parent, where he was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft. He is scheduled to appear in court in March.
