A witness alerted police after an SUV slammed into a utility pole in Beeton over the weekend.

Just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, officers with the Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports that a silver SUV had crashed along Main Street East. The caller also told police there appeared to be a beer can inside the vehicle, raising concerns about possible impairment.

When officers arrived, the driver had already run from the scene. Police later tracked down a 33-year-old man from Toronto and took him into custody.

He now faces numerous charges, including failing to remain at the scene of a collision, impaired operation by alcohol and drugs, refusing to comply with a demand, obstructing a peace officer, dangerous driving, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, three counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited, breaching probation, and two counts of driving while suspended.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
