A traffic call in northern Ontario led to drug trafficking charges against a 17-year-old from Moosonee.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Nipissing West detachment were dispatched around 6:45 a.m. on Feb. 25 to a vehicle in the ditch along Highway 144 near Onaping Lake Road. No injuries were reported in connection with the crash.

During the investigation, officers discovered that a passenger in the vehicle was wanted on an outstanding warrant and arrested the individual without incident. A subsequent search allegedly uncovered suspected cocaine, cash and drug-related items.

As a result, the teen was charged with possession of property obtained by crime and drug trafficking. Police said the identity of the accused cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody, with a future court appearance scheduled in Greater Sudbury.
