A 51-year-old man from Greater Sudbury is facing several charges after a single-vehicle crash near Elliot Lake.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the collision happened around 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 along Highway 108, just before Nordic Mine Road. Officers say the northbound driver, travelling toward the local ski hill on a clear afternoon, attempted to make a curve but went through a guardrail and ended up in a ditch.

Police responding to reports of a possible impaired driver located the vehicle in the snow and noted a strong smell of alcohol, along with numerous bottles found inside and scattered around the crash site. The driver was arrested, and further testing allegedly showed his blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit. The vehicle was towed and impounded.

He has been charged with dangerous operation and two impaired driving offences, including having a blood-alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on April 9.
