A large-scale emergency response unfolded Tuesday afternoon after a snowmobiler suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash on Lake Simcoe.
Air Ornge deployed a helicopter, which landed in a nearby baseball field at Bay Street and Oro-Medonte Line 2 South. Police said officers were supporting Georgian emergency crews after reports of an injured man on the ice, believed to be near the centre of the bay close to Line 3.
Firefighters accessed the frozen lake, located the victim, and administered medical care before moving him to shore. The man, in his 60s, was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto with critical injuries.
Members of the Orillia OPP also attended the scene. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
