A London man convicted in a fatal high-speed crash that killed a local woman is now facing additional legal trouble.
Bahaa Ali, 31, was found guilty of dangerous driving causing death following a trial last fall in connection with a 2020 collision that claimed the life of 67-year-old Joan Clubb. Clubb had been a passenger in a Hyundai Sonata when a speeding Mercedes-Benz struck the vehicle at the intersection of Southdale and White Oak roads on Nov. 3, 2020. She was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.
During the trial, Ali testified that his brother had actually been driving at the time and claimed he initially misled police to protect him. The judge rejected that explanation, determining the evidence was not credible.
Court heard the Mercedes was travelling as fast as 129 km/h in a 60 km/h zone at the time of the crash. The judge ruled that operating the vehicle at more than double the speed limit in a busy commercial area amounted to reckless and dangerous conduct.
Following the decision, Crown Attorney Cara Douglas informed the court that Ali is also facing a separate charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle laid on March 11, 2025. The Crown is seeking to revoke his bail in light of the new allegation.
Defence lawyer Melina Macchia said she was surprised by the development, noting the charge came years after the original case began and that Ali had been released on an appearance notice rather than under bail conditions.
Arguments related to the bail application are scheduled to be heard Tuesday. Ali is expected to return to court for sentencing on the dangerous driving conviction on April 24, 2026.
