A 12-year-old cyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after a collision in Waterloo Tuesday morning.
Police say the incident happened around 8:40 a.m. near the intersection of University Avenue East and Woolwich Street, close to RIM Park, involving a Toyota pickup truck and the child on a bicycle. The 46-year-old driver was not hurt.
The child was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for a period while officers investigated.
Authorities continue to look into the circumstances and are asking any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.
Update – Police have charged the 46-year-old truck driver under the Highway Traffic Act for an unsafe turn and operating with an obstructed view. In addition, the cyclist’s parents received a provincial offence notice for permitting their child, who is under 16, to ride without a properly fitted helmet.
