Fire crews have put out a rooftop fire at a construction site in downtown Toronto that is believed to have triggered an explosion Friday evening.

The incident happened on Richmond Street West near John Street, where a commercial building under construction caught fire. Toronto Fire Services reported that propane cylinders ruptured, sending up heavy flames and thick smoke. No injuries were reported.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m., with witnesses seeing large plumes of black smoke rising from the roof before firefighters arrived. Toronto Police Service said there were concerns about possible explosions and debris falling onto the street.

The blaze escalated to a second alarm, with crews battling it from a nearby building. Firefighters have since extinguished the flames and remain on site to monitor for hotspots.

By about 8:30 p.m., police confirmed that roads and sidewalks in the area had reopened.
