A 62-year-old man from Penetanguishene has died following a snowmobile crash on Georgian Bay Sunday evening.

Emergency crews responded to a call around 7:15 p.m. near the southern tip of Beausoleil Island, approximately 2.7 kilometres from shore. Police say the operator lost control of the snowmobile and was thrown onto the ice, while a passenger stayed at the scene and called for help.

Due to the remote location, multiple agencies responded, including paramedics, police, fire services, and an OPP helicopter. A civilian airboat was used to reach the injured man and transport him back to land, where paramedics attempted to save his life before taking him to hospital.

He was later pronounced dead.

Investigators say alcohol is not considered a factor. The OPP Technical Traffic Investigations unit is assisting as the investigation continues.
