A significant fire in Hamilton’s Ottawa Street commercial area on Sunday caused heavy damage to a mixed-use building with both businesses and residential units.

Fire crews were called to 211 Ottawa St. N. just before 3:30 p.m., where they encountered a large blaze at the rear of the property. The fire quickly spread through the back of the structure and up to the roof, fueled in part by strong winds.

Additional firefighting teams from across the city were brought in to help contain and eventually extinguish the flames. Crews also entered the building to ensure all occupants had safely evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The damage is considered extensive, affecting multiple units between 209 and 211 Ottawa St. N., with losses estimated at over $1 million. Officials believe the fire may have been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
