A man in his 30s has died after a canoe capsized at Heart Lake Conservation Park in Brampton, while a woman who was with him was rescued.

Emergency crews were called around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after reports that two people were in distress on the water. A woman was pulled to safety that night and was treated in hospital for effects related to cold exposure, but the man remained missing. Search teams resumed efforts Sunday morning and later recovered his body.

Peel Regional Police say the case is being treated as suspicious as investigators work to determine whether foul play was involved. Officers noted the conservation area was closed at the time, meaning no one should have been on the lake. They are also looking into how the pair obtained the canoe.

The woman’s vehicle has been seized as part of the investigation. Police confirmed the two individuals knew each other, but their exact relationship has not been disclosed. Neither was wearing a life jacket.
