A fire in Mississauga sent thick black smoke into the sky Wednesday night, prompting a large emergency response.

Crews were called around 8:30 p.m. after multiple reports of heavy smoke coming from the M3 tower at 448 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W.

Witnesses reported visible flames and dense smoke from the roof area. Firefighters reached the seventh-floor podium roof, where they found that an electrical failure involving power cables connected to a crane had sparked the blaze.

The fire then spread to nearby roofing materials and construction foam, producing the dark smoke seen across the skyline.

The building is partially occupied while still under construction. Residents were instructed to remain inside their units as crews worked to contain the fire.

Officials confirmed the flames were limited to the rooftop construction area, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters brought the situation under control quickly and remained on site for about two hours.
